As I speak with business owners each day, the subject of yelp comes up more often than ever. Yelp reviews are showing up prominently in search engine results at an increasing rate. This is particularly true in certain vertical markets like restaurants and many service providers. Sometimes when I check Google results for a search term I see the entire first page of results may be consumed by yelp profile pages.
Often the business owners I speak with have questions about yelp because it does not work like other sites they are familiar with. I often hear that a customer claims to have posted a review on yelp but no review appears. The answer is that yelp is not like many other review sites in that the reviews are heavily filtered. Yelps does this to try to ensure that you can trust the reviews that do appear on a profile page. I just came across this video that does a good job of explaining what yelp does and why.
If you are a business owner with questions about yelp take a moment and watch this video. It is a great way to begin to understand what yelp does and why.
