This is one of those things that everyone knows they should do regularly, but not everyone actually does. Think for a moment about the ramifications to your business should your website go down and not come back up, due to a hardware failure or an attack of some sort. If your site went down how would your business be affected. Personally, it makes me wince to think about it.
Fortunately there is no good reason to risk the possibility of losing your site. There are several good options available to keep you safely backed up.
Thank Goodness for Plug-ins!
Among the gazillion plug-ins available to add functionality to WordPress, are dozens that will give you the ability to back up your website. Some are free, and some are premium plug-ins that are available for a small price. Some allow you to schedule an automatic backup at the time and interval of your choosing. Some let you determine what elements of your website are backed up. Most let you chose where the backup files will be stored.
The spectrum of choices runs from basic and easy to configure, to comprehensive, full featured systems with lots of configurable options. Just remember that the more features and options your plug-in offers, the more of a challenge it may be to set up properly.
You may not need a choice of 14 different places to save your backup files. Depending on your expertise and comfort level, the best choice is the one that will generate consistent, reliable, backup files.
VaultPress is a subscription based, fully automatic backup solution, offered by Automattic, the commercial enterprise behind the open source WordPress software. If anyone would be in a position to offer a clean, fully integrated backup solution, it would be these folks. Vault press offers several levels of service with a variety of features, beginning with VaultPress lite at just $5 per month.
VaultPress Lite Features
Daily backups that happen automatically, so you can focus on creating, not logistics.
Automated site restores, so you can restore your entire site with a single click.
Thirty days of saved backups, so you can go back in time to restore the last clean version of your site.
We like VaultPress for two main reasons. First it is extremely easy to use. Second, it offers a customer service staff to help those who don’t do this sort of thing on a daily basis. Instead of backing up all of your files every day or every hour, VaultPress only creates a backup of what has changed. That is efficient!
If all else fails.
You may have a basic backup in place and not even know it. Many website hosting companies like BlueHost offer a complimentary backup that runs about once a week. It’s not something they talk about, and they don’t offer any guarantees of any kind regarding the data. If you find yourself in need of a site backup, and you have no solution in place, do check with your host. They may have a way to restore your files at least to a version from the not too distant past.
